FEBRUARY 10, 2024

Our Renaissance. The re-birth we all experienced post lockdown, the butterflies bursting from their crusty old cocoons (that actually needed to be busted up a so we could escape!). In retrospect (the PTSD we really all maybe haven’t dealt with notwithstanding), the Covid Lockdown Incident was a collective opportunity for self-reflection, a re-direction of priorities that had so many of my New York artist friends and peers either moving back to Ohio or deciding to Bucket List their way through the rest of their lives. The bungee jumping, traveling to Iceland and micro-dosing on mushrooms have become so normalized that questioning a person’s post-lockdown motives seems rude, over-the top-judgmental and totally insensitive.

After all, The Renaissance came after the Black Plague, where so much death and suffering prompted an exlposion of interest in science, art and literature. Eclipsed was the medieval idea that we are only here to live for heaven, the so-called after life. Oh hell no! What about now? Life is happening now! So said the gin-guzzling, Charleston-dancing, shing-a-ling fringe-wearing flappers and dapper Dons, so traumatized by the Spanish Influenza pandemic of the early 20th century that their hedonism left them no choice but to drink, dance and spend their way into the great crash of 1929. I mean, you only live once.

“YOLO” is what the kids are calling this phillosophy nowadays, and I am all for feeling YOLO real hard! Boy, was I a rat in this maze. One of those throngs of hopeful doe-eyed youths who moved to big sparkling New York City with a dream, only to find themselves scrambling so hard to earn a decent living, that the dream itself seemed to become lost in a haze of pale yellow city smog. However, through my own personal great depression of 2020-2022, one thing never changed for me; songwriting is the therapy and the solution for all that ails, always and forever. I highly recommend this as medicine, because suddenly it didn’t seem as though my career momentum had not been interrupted by a virus at all. That in fact, perhaps a mental reset was just what Doctor Universe ordered!

And so, I’m gonna g’head and switch up my Blog format for a spell. See, normally I’d post annoying pics of me on vacation or on a writers’ retreat, disperse a laundry list of projects I am working on, and pay tribute to those of my friends and artists who have passed on. I’m feeling less careless with my feelings and observations, quite frankly much more guarded now than I was before Covid. I think I speak better through creativity for the time being. Maybe that will change. Or maybe not. Post-Pandemic thoughts reside in my songwriting, and I thought Broadway was the right style for this tune. Rough Demo ensues…

“NEW YORK CITY DAZE” written and performed by David James Boyd, copyright 2020

CAUGHT IN A NEW YORK CITY DAZE
STUCK IN MY GAY OLD 90’S WAYS
I’M LOSING TRACK OF YEARS OF DAYS
CLOCK IN A JOB THAT BARELY PAYS
HERE IN MY…NEW YORK CITY DAZE
ANOTHER RAT CAUGHT IN THE MAZE
AS MY SKIN WRINKLES MY HAIR GREYS
AT EVERY BUFFET I JUST GRAZE
AND ORDER EXTRA MAYONAISE
HERE IN MY…NEW YORK CITY DAZE

COME ON, BROADWAY, MUSICAL THEATER,
WHEN’S IT ALL COMIN’ TO ME?
IN SOME ODD WAY I ALWAYS NEW THEATER
WOULD NEVER EVER GET ME SYMPATHY...
LET ALONE TEA

THE DRAG QUEEN SERVES IT AND SASHAYS
MY EYES JUST SERVE AN EMPTY GAZE
I USED TO DRESS LIKE ALL THE GAYS
OBSERVING EVERY CRAZE AND PHRASE
NOW IN MY NEW YORK CITY DAYS
I PICTURED LYING ON MY CHAISE
AWARDS MY DRESSING ROOM DISPLAYS
ON STAGE THE MUSIC PLAYS AND PLAYS
MY NAME IN LIGHTS GLOWS ALL ABLAZE
THE BEST OF NEW YORK CITY DAYS!

COME ON TIMES SQUARE, COME ON SARDI’S
DOES THE DREAM GET LOST HERE IN OUR HEADS?
THEN WHEN I GET THERE, THE BEST PART IS
THE CRITICS SITTING RIPPING ME TO SHREDS!
YOU POUND THE PAVEMENT ’TIL YOUR TITS ARE SORE
YOUR BODY QUIVERS FOR SO MUCH MORE
ARE YOU AN ARTIST OR A CATERING WHORE?
WELL THE CITY ALWAYS SETTLES THE SCORE!

SO IS THE DREAM LOST IN A HAZE?
CAN I INSPRE AND AMAZE
AM I TOO OLD FOR MORE DELAYS?
DO WE RESIGN TO OUR CLICHE’S? NO, NO!
HOWEVER HEAVY MY HEART WEIGHS
SEARCHING FOR PRAISE THAT NEVER STAYS…ANYWAY(S)!
HERE IN MY…NEW YORK…(STEP KICK JAZZ HANDS)…CITY…(BIG FINISH)…DAAAAAYS…
CITY DAZE!(FOSSE HEAD DOWN)

With love and all my heart,

The endless days and nights of Quarantine, 2020.(photos: Suzanne DeFiore)

I. Can’t. Breathe.  We all said it in 2020, one way or another. So said George Floyd, in the most devastating moment. So said the intubated Covid patients before passing into the hereafter. So said the millions of people trapped in their homes, trying to live together without driving each other nuts. And indeed, so said all of the world, as we watched an unhinged maniacal bigot on the daily; sucking all of the oxygen out of our lives, running our country into the dirt, so far underground there was never any chance to breathe.

sfiore_kesslerwindowportrait8494.JPG

No, Chad is not trying to hit me over the head with a frying pan. We are banging on things for the nightly 7:00pm neighborhood claps for frontline workers..

And yet finally, a chance to come up for air. A new year, a new president, a new vaccine, at least a little new hope. No more carnival barking, no more horned-headed white supremacists, no more vampiric lawyers sweating, leaking and farting on live television. Oh sure, they’ll be back, but for one brief shining moment there is air. And how refreshing to know that we are all survivors. We are all warriors, tougher than we ever thought we were. I know I am a warrior now, if I’m recalling last March, as I lay there watching my partner hack his lungs out with Covid, his 103 degree fever spiking by the minute, with his heavy breathing.

Our little life-saver, Ruby, rescued a month before the pandemic hit. Thank GAWD!

I honestly thought he would end up on the floor of the Javitz Center, waiting for a bed, and that there was a chance I wouldn’t even be able to say goodbye. But The Force was with us. He slowly recovered, and I was asymptomatic as it turns out. The ensuing months surprisingly ended up largely productive for me, considering I couldn’t be a rat running through the maze of New York City as per usual. Isolation was both a motivator and a distraction from the grim realities projectile vomiting at us via the 24 hour news cycle.  I’ll start with what I didn’t get to do in 2020 first, so I can afterwards revel in any forward movements, artistically or career-wise.

TRAVEL GROUP

As many people may know, I come across as a horrible Instagram and Facebook…how did a friend put it…”Facebragger”. At first I was horrified to absorb this, but soon realized there is nothing I can do about it. I travel and I love it. And I don’t post most of my own pics, my travel group tags me so I have no choice but to be a Facebragger. People ask me: how do you go so many places in a year? Well, I am beyond not a rich person. However, my partner and I ARE highly resourceful.

We and our friends formed a travel group with about 10-12 of some most awesome friends/couples we know. With that many people pitching in, it becomes not only somewhat cheaper, but possible to rent a large villa in Tuscany, or a sprawling chateau in France. I know. If you haven’t already, you can see how those photos would be completely annoying AF on social media. The following is a sample of said annoying photos. Please enjoy, you’re welcome!

Yeah, I know. It’s cray. Even I am rolling my eyes at myself as I write this. But you know what, YOLO! I miss my travel family so much it hurts. Some day very soon I hope to be back at the airport, tingling with anticipation for whatever destination, and yes, with my #annoying #obnoxious #facebragger #pics! Just one more, then I’m done, promise.

Okay that’s all. Enough vacation, back to the evil plague and the projects that saved me from jumping out of the window!

THEATRE

Ah yes, the sordid topic of The Theatre. Zoom readings, Zoom meetings, the concerted effort to maintain theatrical creativity through the miraculous technical advent(and advent calendar looking)thing we call Zoom. No really, what would we have done 20 years ago? Leave dozens of messages on each other’s answering machines? I’m thinking maybe it’s a good idea to take a moment and be grateful for the ability to carry on, albeit in little Brady Bunch boxes.

After an amazing, fruitful and educational workshop in 2019 of my musical Stepchild at IRT Theater, we were one of the shows gaining momentum right before Covid hit us. Luckily, associate artistic director, the fabulous Miss May Adrales (at the fantastic Milwaukee Rep) offered us an opportunity to continue our work with a video project. It is a song from the show, a duet called “Body and Soul”, and it was an amazing and challenging experience. Two singers(The wonderful Nicole Vande Zande and myself) two actors (the brilliant duo Amelia Hensley and Dickie Hearts) and a director (the sensational Josh Castille) all working from their own homes, being their own technicians and lighting, costume and everything designers, and making it work. I am so proud of this crew and what they did!

And as usual, more re-writes of the libretto, some songs cut, some new ones composed. Quarantine Time spent creatively as much as possible, and it literally saved me and preserved my sanity, as I know it has done for so many artists out there(not gonna lie, Lexipro also helped, just sayin’).

Additionally, I worked diligently on the opera I have been collaborating on(as the composer), since 2015. The working title is The Medusa Project. A radical retelling of the classic Greek myth, it is a through sung musical piece in the vein of “Jesus Christ Superstar”. Conceived by Chad Kessler, my collaborators are the great director Rachel Klein and the artful lyricist Erik Ransom (Erik also has composed and written lyrics for several of his own musicals, notably the award-winning Grindr:The Opera)

And what a joy/challenge to virtually record demos. The Divas who keep making it easy and fun are none other than the glorious Miss Badia Farha ,the astounding Miss Ashanti J’Aria, and the Lady Miss Grace Stockdale. Thank you so much, so great to work with you immense talents!

So much more to come soon on this exciting new work in progress!

RECORDING

I forgot how much I love remixing! It’s part of my life I hadn’t explored in years, since it became increasingly difficult/impossible to make any coin. “Alexa! Play all my favorite music for free without any compensation for the musicians involved! Theenx!” Yet and still, I was happy to get together with my old pal and bestie Randy Bettis, the other half of my old remix duo, BetBoyz. And even better to re-unite with Ubertalent, Grammy-nominated NYC nightlife superstar, Marty Thomas! His mashup of “I Am What I Am” from the musical “La Cage Aux Folles” with Christina Aguilera’s “Beautiful” might seem an unlikely pairing at first. But this ended up being one of the best remixes I have ever done, and another Covid triumph. The remix is soon to be released, and hopefully I’ll get to hear it on a dance floor(remember those?) soon!

FILM/TV

“George Nordstrom: Overtalker” (L-R) Tina Chilip, Chad Kessler and Jackie Tohn

“George Nordstrom: Overtalker” (L-R) Tina Chilip, Chad Kessler and Jackie Tohn

I have also had a blast this year composing all the music for the mini -miniseries "George Nordstrom: Overtalker." Created by award winning writer Lynn Rosen (Darwin) this comedy is  about a lovable misfit suffering from the clinical condition of logorrhea (compulsive overtalking).  In the throes of the pandemic and all alone in his tiny Queens apartment  George has no one to talk at, so he must brave the virtual world…online dating, Facebook Live, confronting old flames, as he tries not to lose his sh*t during his isolation.

Each bite sized episode ( 5-8 minutes) is directed by nationally acclaimed director Meredith McDonough and stars Chad Kessler (the Emmy nominated "Tainted Dreams", "The Big Gay Italian" Trilogy) as George with Tina Chilip (Jessica Jones, Elementary), Dede Lovejoy (The Blacklist, The Wire) and Jackie Tohn (Netflix's GLOW and Best Leftovers Ever)  as those attempting to help George find a quiet moment. And  I may even make a cameo.....

REMEMBERING OUR FRIENDS

A shining star left us this last year. My dear friend Michael Harris passed away in february just before quarantine. That was hard to write. I have known Michael for so long. I am only just glad we got to lay him to rest before people couldn’t have the privilege of saying goodbye properly at a funeral service. Talented actor, singer, dancer and hilarious, generous loving guy is how he will always be remembered. I imagine him laughing when I look up at the sky and say “Girl, you in a better place. You would have hated Miss Corona more than anyone…” Michael we love you, you live in our hearts, always.

Ari Gold lives in our hearts not only for his music, his spirit and trailblazing artistry, but also for his brave and valiant fight with cancer. Too young to go at the age of 47, I had the honor of working with him on his track “Where the Music Takes You”. The first openly Gay pop star and multiple Billboard Dance chart-topping artist, he is and will remain an iconic staple of New York City nightlife. He was real cute and real sweet too. Ari, the music took you away from us, but your soul is alive and well in so many you have touched. And he would have loved and appreciated the fact that he was honored at this year’s Grammy Awards. Rest easy, beautiful soul.

CONGRATULATING OUR FRIENDS

May Adrales

May Adrales

Congratulations to my dear friend May Adrales on her new gig as Artistic Director for the Lark Play Development Center. She has worked so hard for this, and I am so proud of her always. Her first panel was a powerful discussion with many Asian actors and theatre community allies, enabling all to let our emotions go and discuss the tragic recent events in Atlanta in a safe, non-judgmental space. Powerful and educational, it marked a brilliant continuation of her compassionate and introspective leadership. Rest assured, the Lark and the world of theatre is going to be in good hands!

Stop Asian Hate.

And so it goes. So much to reflect upon, so much to ponder for the future. The trick is to stay in the present, I think. Breathe in the life of every moment you can. Besides, as people always say, after the plague came the Renaissance. And after the next plague came the Jazz Age. And when this is over, you best believe I will be posting the most annoying #facebragger photos possible. Peace and love, and thank you for reading.:)

Re:BLOGGING

Okay, I have been a terrible Blogger. I just felt that with all that’s happening in the world, it seems silly talking about myself in a blog…. but look, it’s show business, and that’s what I gotta do. Also, I have exciting experiences to share about projects I have been working on for many years! Thank you for checking it out…

STEPCHILD: A NEW MUSICAL

Wow. What an incredible whirlwind this show has been. I can’t believe how much I have learned. Along with my beloved collaborators, co-librettist Chad Kessler and co-conceiver Kori Rushton, I was able to showcase what I believe to be the best of my work as a composer/lyricist. More importantly, I am privileged enough to get to SEE my songs and story interpreted by incredible Deaf talent through ASL.!! I am so lucky! I love it so much.

However, it's important that us hearing people don't get so caught up in the notion of just watching a pretty little "hand dance". I've learned, and I am still learning, the vital necessity ASL is for so many people around this world! More than just beautiful, it is essential for communication, and not to be taken for granted as something just visually stimulating for an audience. As I struggle in my ASL classes, I realize.... it ain't that easy! Ha! I am always riding the wave of a huge learning curve, and consistantly humbled by what I am learning in this "work in progress" I call "me". .

And at the same time, this year remains one of my most exciting and creatively fulfilling yet. First, we were accepted into the Rough Draft Festival at La Guardia Performing Arts Center. I loved the Rough Draft Festival because the title of it suggests that you can kind of succeed and fail at the same time, unlike with other festivals, which (I believe unfairly) actually have critics come and give reviews that you can’t erase from a Google search on your show. At times this is detrimental to the development of a young show, as it becomes harder to sell. I highly recommend this experience to any writer who just wants a chance to get their show up on it’s feet. The team there is lovely and supportive, much gratitude to Handan Ozbilgin Bromley, Scott F. Davis and also to Steven Hitt for your constant inspiration!

Our presentation was received with an overwhelmingly positive response, with much constructive criticism being considered in our current re-writes. We really had the best of the best at the helm. Our incredibly talented Drama Desk nominated director, Kim Weild (Fetes De La Nuit, Soot And Spit, First Love, American Moor) really helped us shape and mold our “Deaf Cinderella” story in just a short few weeks, before a five day rehearsal period that scared the hell out of me, but proved beneficial in terms of focus and concentration. Bless you Kim!

A show featuring drama, song and American Sign Language is no easy feat. We accomplished this with the tremendous help and vision of our brilliant Director Of Artistic Sign Language(D.A.S.L.),Alexandria Wailes,   most recently of Children Of A Lesser God on Broadway. She also has appeared on Broadway in the recent revivals of Big River and Spring Awakening and can be seen in the upcoming I Was Most Alive With You by Craig Lucas at Playwrights Horizons. I can’t even believe she ran from signing for Pink at the Super Bowl to our meetings for Stepchild, haha!! OMG! Thank you so much Alexandria for everything!

Alexandria Wailes

Music Direction for the show was done by the fierce Dan Pardo.(Goodspeed musicals, Come From Away). It’s a miracle when you get to work with someone who makes your music sound like gold. He found the best possible musicians,  (Joseph Brent and Kevin Garcia) not to mention Dan's own Ivory-tickling prowess, ha! Thanks so much, Dan! Oooh, also catch Dan's web show, "Pardo's Turn". Great and fun analysis of the American Songbook!

The glorious cast, crew and creatives of Stepchild.

The Cast! Amelia Hensley (Broadway’s Spring Awakening, I Was Most Alive With You), Melissa van der Schiff (Broadway’s  Big River, Bonnie And Clyde), Dickie Hearts(TV’s Grace And Frankie), and  our own D.A.S.L., Alexandria Wailes, made star turns in the presentation, as did the fabulously talented Miss Nicole Vande Zande, Jacob Hoffman, Alexandra Mazzuccelli, April Lavalle, Johnny Link and 13 year-old Catalene Sachietti Manganelli. I fell for each and every one of them and couldn’t be more proud of the work they did!

Moreover, and then enough about Stepchild, we were featured on DPAN, the nation's largest Sign Language Network, and that was perhaps one of the biggest thrills of all! Thank you. Josh Castille, for giving us a platform, and for spreading the word.

The leading Sign Language channel, DPAN, (Deaf Professional Artist Network), shows clips and interviews on opening night of Stepchild's workshop at the Rough Draft Festival In NYC.

Oh wait! Finally, songs from Stepchild made their West Coast Premiere in Beverley Hills this summer, at the Wallis Annenberg Center. I was reunited with Catalene Sacchetti Manganelli and Amelia Hensley and it was magic all over again! So nice to work with singer  Kristina Meyering as well. Thank you Jo-Ann Dean and Mona Jean Cedar for throwing this amazing ASL cabaret full of dancing, music, poetry and comedy. They are coming to NYC so watch out, it is truly an unforgettable evening.Terrylene Sacchetti  (brilliant actress, ASL Poet, activist, and also Cat's mom) re-assured and encouraged me when I attempted my limited ASL. She also is the soul and spirit behind so much of this show…Thank you, Love!

PROJECT X

My next project is a new musical, a rock/soul/pop opera that is both challenging and incredibly rewarding. The thrill of theatre is collaborating with such immense talent.  Of course, I re-team with my frequent collaborator and all-around inspiration, Chad Kessler. However this time, we work with new and exciting collaborators!

Queen of development is acclaimed director Rachel Klien, whose direction for the recent Off-Broadway Grateful Dead musical (Red Roses Green Gold) was incredible.  I sat in the audience with all of the 70-year old potheads(never has the Minetta Lane Theatre smelled this way to my knowledge. I was shocked and amused simultaneously. And maybe a little high…) and smiled from ear to ear, watching as everyone sang along with the actors. Rachel did a fantastic job of navigating through this strange, kooky and delightful world!

Myself, Chad Kessler, Rachel Klein and Erik Ransom

It's so great to be able to work with our dear talented friend,  Erik Ransom(Coming, More than All The World)! His show Grindr:The Opera is a sold out hit in Chicago and London, in addition to being nominated for numerous awards. I can't wait to set more of my music to his visceral, poetic lyrics as we plow forward with "Project X".

REMEMBERING OUR FRIENDS

Robbyne Kaamil

Robbyne Kaamil

NYC night life will never be the same without our dear friends Robbyne Kaamil and Poppi Kramer. Both fixtures in the NYC nightlife scene, both hilarious female comedians/performers. We lost them both in roughly the same week, and that was rough. However, these moments remind us of how lucky we are, and these two beautiful spirits live in the hearts and minds of so many gays. No really. Those bitches knew ALL the gays, tho. We still hear their laughs, and that gives us comfort, and helps us find "Grateful"! Rest In Peace, beautiful souls.

SO MUCH AHEAD!

...As always, working on, developing, discussing and pitching many projects for theatre, film and television! Stay tuned, more to come, and thank you for reading! Xx djb
